Penile revascularization (diagnosis – 2 weeks post op)

Nighthawk

1 Month Down:
I feel great. Counting the days until I can exercise. No pain except for the boredom. I peeled off the tape on my stomach and the scar looked great, it looked like an old scar that was healed already (it looked bad before because the scab was stuck to the tape and not my stomach anymore, don’t be afraid to peel it off). The scar on my scrotum is barely noticeable as well and the tape/scab that was down there I peeled off the first week.
Erection quality has gone down. I was getting decent blood flow and erections the first couple weeks and now find myself struggling to get or maintain one. Even with Viagra it’s either ineffective or I have to watch porn to get a 5/10 erection. I’m not sure why this is but I really hope things turn the other way and get better which I thought would be happening.
Has anyone else experienced this and/or still experiencing this?
It would be really nice to hear from someone with a similar situation and I hope this is just a phase.

Dont worry at all this happened with me about the 3rd or 4th week and it returned so dont get anxious if you can avoid. It is difficult but you will be fine. Your body need time to get normalized in a strange way, thats how i viewed the situation. Hope all things are amazing for you and if you need to talk please ask anything you want. Best wishes.

Ya i think I overreacted a bit. I had a rough week and my mind started jumping to conclusions. I’ve already noticed a lot of improvement since my last post. Thank you so much for the encouragement and positivity it means a lot!

Ya I wouldn’t worry about it either. There are a lot of variables when it comes to getting erections. We’re not going to always 100% of the time have erections every single night – depending on quality of sleep, if you drank that night, etc. Also I feel like you have to allow your body and mind to work together again – as in be confident that you will be able to have an erection when the time comes. Since there was such a disconnect before (esp. w/ me). I was with a girl last night for the first time since my surgery – we started making out and I didn’t even think (like oh am I going to get an erection?) and I was soooo surprised how fast I got an erection! It was like how it was before all this happened.

Hang in there – things will get better!

Approaching 2 months post op

Things have been a roller coaster lately. I go through each week with either great, full, erections along with morning erections and then some weeks there’s nothing at all and I feel exactly the same as before. The worst is when I take Viagra or Cialis and it’s like my penis wants to have an erection and the base fills up but then blood just doesn’t flow enough to fill the head of my penis. These phases will last for days at a time I don’t know if it’s stress or what. Very frustrating feeling sitting there with half an erection. Still, the good weeks make up for everything. Just hanging in there and waiting patiently for these old problems to go away and I know it’s not going to happen overnight.

As far as everything else goes I’m great. You can barely see the incision on my scrotum and the one on my stomach just looks like an old scar. No pain in either just a bit of tingling in the stomach incision area. I’ve been working out, playing a bit of hockey, basketball, working, all back to normal health now.

I’m still discouraged about erection quality and nervous about testing it out with a girl just yet and for some reason testosterone or sex drive just isn’t where it needs to be just yet. Hopefully not far off. Gotta stay positive.

Im sorry to hear that things are difficult brother but hope you will continue to improve. The things you describe are similar to what I feel I experienced and if you need somebody to talk to let me know of a good time to do this. As advice follow the doctors orders and do what you can to have a positive mind frame that is an important factor as this surgery involves many conflicting emotions that are complex. Hope you are doing better recently and return to the way you felt previously when things were happier and felt more as you liked. Stay strong and be hopeful. Best wishes.

Nighthawk

I am 23 years old. My problem began 2-3 years ago. I have been snowboarding all my life and when I was 20 decided to move to a ski resort and work and snowboard full time. I had sex my first month up there in December and everything was normal and life was great. A month later I turned 21 and began having too much fun. I started mixing drinking with snowboarding and had a false sense of confidence. There are a number a huge falls I can remember. I grew up playing hockey and skateboarding too so even a huge fall didn’t affect me and I always got right up and kept going. Well, looking back I know one of these falls was the cause of my injury because I tried to have sex again in February and it was unlike anything I had ever experienced. For the first time in my life I could not get it up, not even at all. It was embarrassing and I just blamed it on the alcohol. I noticed over the next year and a half the same pattern every single time. It got to the point where I had to go to the one person who always helped me and had the answers my whole life. My Mom. She laughed and thought I was kidding at first. Haha, not an easy thing to talk to your mom about. I got blood tests done and my testosterone was in the 300’s which is insanely low for someone in their 20’s. I was put on DHEA, B12, and vitamin D pills by a holistic doctor. I quit drinking, stopped having coffee, and nothing was working. At this point in my life I didn’t even try to talk to girls because I knew my penis wouldn’t work and I felt it was pointless. Kind of depressing. After the holistic doctor I went to a urologist who put me on daily testosterone injections that cost $300/month. My testosterone went back up as high as the 700’s. While this helped my energy and sex drive it wasn’t helping erections. Then, the smartest thing that urologists ever did was suggest I go see Dr. G. Dr G. was pissed when I told him I was on those daily injections. I didn’t know, but apparently that trains my brain to think it doesn’t ever need to produce testosterone again making me dependent on the injections for the rest of my life if I would have kept doing them! Also, tells my brain not to produce sperm cells making it so I wouldn’t be able to have kids! It’s a miracle I found Dr. G when I did. So, I had an ultra sound and then an angiogram and found out I had a blockage and I was a good candidate for surgery. I did have a minor setback after the angiogram though..lol. DON’T WALK AROUND OR DRIVE AFTER THE ANGIOGRAM. Leaving back home after the angiogram my dad stopped at liquor store and we went in to get food. I got really dizzy all of a sudden and asked for his keys told him I didn’t feel good and would meet him in the car. I sat in a chair outside the store for a minute since I felt like puking and everything was spinning. A breeze blew through and the car was in sight. I got up and tried to make it. Next thing you know I woke up covered in blood on the ground. I passed out right on my face and broke my jaw in 3 pivot points (center of chin and near each ear) and one one point it broke into 7 pieces. Basically my jaw exploded. Not to mention breaking my nose, 4 teeth, and getting stitches on my chin and eyebrow. So, needless to say I spent some unplanned extra time in the hospital and the following months weren’t fun either. Just my luck. Time healed everything and a couple weeks ago on October 1st I finally had my surgery. After everything else that happened I was not nervous about surgery or pain at all. It’s easy and over before you know it. The only pain is in the stomach where they did the incision and it’s really not much at all. It’s really only painful getting out in and out of bed. They kept me an extra night since I was still really dizzy walking around and I was a fall risk. Dr. G’s office is right next to the hospital so we asked for a wheelchair so I could go over there without having to get in and out of the car and not have to walk around dizzy. The idiots brought a wheelchair with no foot supports. It was all abdominal muscles trying to keep your feet off the ground or you let your feet drag around the block on the cement which still hurt my stomach incision. That pissed me off so we ditched the wheelchair. Had a quick ultrasound at Dr. G’s and got cleared to head back home. I tried to sleep through the 3 hour car ride and it wasn’t bad. The first few days are the hardest. If I took nausea medicine and percocet I felt great. If I didn’t it was hard to sleep, and pain in the stomach. I contribute most of that pain to diet though. I didn’t follow the liquid diet at all and it wasn’t until a week later that I had my first bowel movement from a fleet enema (not fun). The stool softener and suppositories did not do a thing. Once I got the enema out of the way though I felt amazing and bowel movements became normal. I didn’t have to take one pain pill after that and I never took ambien once. Just follow the liquid diet and don’t wait to take the enema. The sooner you get it over with the better you’ll feel. Also, walking around is a hugeeee help for the bowel movements. That first week I was home I had slight erections every night and one exceptional one maybe 6.5/10. I noticed that penis curves way up now which I thought was weird how that changed. None of the erections ever woke me up and surprisingly weren’t painful. Now, 16 days in I am soooo bored. I feel amazing but I can’t do anything. I haven’t had anymore good erections so I am a little discouraged by that, but I have faith everything will be just fine. Overall I’d say the surgery is a breeze, just buy an xbox, find some books to read, or something so you’re not as bored as I am. Dr. G. is a miracle worker and a really down to earth, caring, great guy. If you have this problem just get it taken care of you are in good hands.

Nighthawk,

Good to know I’m not the only one experiencing these symptoms. I too was great with erections up until about 7 week post op. I am still having nighttime erections but do not have strong erections during the day or while watching porn – like how it was 1-6 week post op (9/10 erections). It’s very frustrating but I know there’s that 6 month window where things can change as everything is healing. Hang in there man!
